Healing Stages of Fresh Piercing

Once you get your new piercing, watch it and feel good by following these piercing aftercare tips. The healing stages of any body piercing are stunning and complex, and it is also prone to interference due to local and regular factors such as moisture, infection, age, nutritional status, and body type. However, in a favorable environment, the body works miraculously to heal and replace weakened tissue.

  • Swelling/Redness – It’s rare for your piercing to bleed, but immediately after pierced and the next 24 hours are when it’s probably. This is a natural response from the body and is mandatory to clot the wound.
  • The redness stage stays around 24 to 48 hours after being pierced. This stage allows the body to deal with debris and help growth factors and proteins that inspire immune cells to assist tissue repair.
  • Dry skin/Crust – During this phase a shiny, crimson powder tissue fills the wound insert with connective tissue forming new blood vessels and shrinking the wound gap. After that epithelial cells arise from the wound margins and move across the wound area. This phase often lasts anywhere from 4 to 24 days.
  • Maturation – The new tissue slowly gains power and flexibility. Here, collagen fibers rearrange, the tissue transforms and matures and there is an overall growth in elastic strength. This phase differs from piercing to piercing lasting anywhere from 21 days to 2 years.

Piercing Aftercare Tips

  • During healing, do not twist, spin, or rotate your jewelry.
  • Stay your jewelry in your new piercing for five weeks or more. Taking off your jewelry too early may cause the hole to close. When healing stages are done, know the total healing time for your piercing as guided by your piercer. This is when you can change your jewelry over as regularly as you wish.
  • While piercing aftercare new piercing may look healed before the healing process is complete. This type of wound will heal from the inside, but it may feel fine on the outside, and the interior could still be weak. Be patient, and regularly clean your piercing during the entire healing period.
  • During your piercing aftercare, you may also notice discoloration, itching, and the discharge of a whitish-yellow fluid (not pus) that will form some crust on the jewelry—this is also normal! The tissue may contract around the jewelry as it heals.
  • Wear clean, comfortable, breathable clothing.
  • Make sure your bed covers are washed and changed regularly.
  • Sleeping directly on an ear piercing, navel, or face piercing can hurt, and even kindle shifts in the piercing’s angle. Placing a travel pillow, and then setting down your ear in the opening can be helpful to avoid irritation.
  • Avoid stress and too much caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.

Piercing Aftercare Techniques

Some piercings, like earlobe, are more common and safer than other body piercings such as belly button, face, genital, and dermal. Proper piercing aftercare ensures a safe and simple healing process for ear piercings. Here are key techniques to follow:

1. Avoid Touching

Avoid touching as much as possible and do not rotate or twist jewelry. This helps prevent infection.

2. Clean Daily

Always wash your hands before cleaning the piercing. Use a sterile saline solution or mild, fragrance-free cleanser with warm water twice daily. Dry the area with earbuds or gently tap it with clean, disposable paper products.

3. Keep Jewelry In Place

Avoid removing your jewelry in your fresh piercing for 4-5 weeks or more. Taking off your jewelry too early may cause the piercings to close.

4. Avoid Chemicals

Avoid beauty and hair products on or around the new piercing. It can lead to infection and damage your piercing. Always use hypoallergenic jewelry like Surgical stainless steel, Gold, Silver, and Titanium to avoid irritation.

5. Keep Monitor On Your Piercing

Look out for sore, red, puffy, or discharge. If these occur, you may have an infection. If any of these don’t go away quickly, consult a dermatologist.

6. Keep Your Piercing Dry

Stay your piercing dry and clean. Avoid sinking your new piercings such as pools, baths, spas, and oceans!

What Is Normal?

Even a healed piercing can contract or close in minutes, having been there for years! This differs from person to person; if you love your piercing – do not leave it empty.

If you don’t stick to a regular cleaning discipline for your piercing, some smelly bodily secretions may occur. This is normal, and we suggested including cleaning as part of your daily hygiene routine.
